Academic Teachers
The Florida Department of Corrections offers rewarding career opportunities as Academic Teachers provide instruction in traditional courses (e.g., math, English, reading, science, social studies, etc.). Students in academic education work toward earning their high school diploma or equivalency or may complete coursework for self-betterment. Academic instruction helps ensure that incarcerated individuals have the skills needed to return to society job ready. Once you join the FDC, there are many opportunities for career advancement.

- Professionally certified teachers will earn a $1,000 hiring bonus.

Shift Schedule
Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree is required for hire.
- Candidates who do not possess a professional Florida teaching certification can be hired on a contingent basis while they work towards a Florida teaching certificate in their preferred subject areas.
- Once hired, non-certified teachers can take advantage of the state’s employee tuition waiver.

The Florida Department of Corrections offers rewarding career opportunities as a Career & Technical Education (CTE) teacher. CTE teachers provide instruction which is aligned to Florida’s in-demand occupations. Technical training, employability skill development, and industry-recognized credentialing are integrated into the CTE programs and ensure incarcerated individuals are job-ready upon release. Once you join the FDC, there are many career advancement steps that progress from CTE teacher, Regional CTE Coordinator and CTE Administrator.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent in this position is responsible for teaching the assigned vocational subject(s) to students at a correctional institution/facility. Duties include but will not be limited to the following:
- Plans, develops, and conducts classes in the assigned subject(s).
- Utilizes various teaching techniques and activities to assist students with their educational advancement.
- Responsible for the supervision of inmates assigned to the class.
- Conducts roll calls, counts and maintaining attendance records.
- Ensures that order and discipline, tool control, and safety are maintained in the classroom and/or shop.
- Continually evaluates students and makes determinations as to overall progress.
- Administers grades and evaluates tests.
- Counsels and advises individuals regarding their program progress, behavior, or personal concern.
- Participates in staff meetings, seminars, and workshops to identify needed curriculum changes and to facilitate professional development.
- Assists in budget preparation and processing purchase requests for the education program.

- Be a high school graduate or its “equivalent”.
- Six years’ experience in the vocation (or directly related to the vocation) being taught; or A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two years of occupational experience in the vocation (or directly related to the vocation) being taught; or additional education or training may substitute on a year-for-year basis for up to four (4) years of the required experience as described above.
